Gentlemen, If a guy was looking at a two row planter; say a JD290 and knew very little about them what should he be looking for? How do you get the road tires down to lift the planter for transport? I would like to plant some small food plots and some household use sweet corn. I have a 1952 8N. Could you advise on any other brands or models to look at? What about price? This past weekend at a farm auction the planter went for $85.00. To high or to low? Plates seem to trun in hopper, Drop tubes were in hoppers with an extra chain of some kind. Plates seemed rusty. In advance thanks for your help.

The 290 is a great planter. I had to buy parts for mine at a local junk yard to make mine work. They are not that complicated once you get one and start to work with it. A om from JD would be a big help to familiarize yourself with what should be there when you go to buy and after to make sure it s working just right. The biggest problem are the fertilizer boxes and boots which get pretty rusted when ignored. If you buy one and have trouble just email me and I will try and help. I have used mine for 5 years to plant 10 acres of corn for the critters. Drew s/w WI.
