I had a chance this weekend to look at why the knives are not resting on the ledger plates of the rock guards. (If you don't remember, I replaced all of the rock guards with new ones). Looking down the length of the bar from the outer end, they all line up. The problem appears to be the very first ledger plate that is mounted to the bar itself where the knife guides are located. The new rock guards line up with themselves but not with that first plate. According to the manual "Align the guards by striking the forward end up or down with a hammer until the ledger plates align with each other and with the plates on the inner and outer shoe." I take this to mean that I should be able to bend the rock guards up to match the plate on the inner shoe? Any suggestions/advice?

Thanks,
Ken

I agree, if all your guards are lining up, I would shim other things to fit them, rather than pound every one....

Did you get real NH parts, or did you get a 'universal' style guards? I've found those 'universal' guards do not actually fit on my 501 - they look real close, but there are minor differences that cause problems.

For bending the guards, dad welded a pry bar, easier than pounding, and maybe not quite as hard on the guard/ sickle/ bar. I could e-mail a picture of the bar if anyone wants. Planting is about to start here, so e-mailing me a reminder would be good...

Ken, Pounding on the guards is OK if they are out of alignment with each other. However, I wouldn't beat on 17 or so guards to match the shoe plate. This would definitely put a twist in your knife and cause undue wear on the legers. Keewaydin has the right approach. Make the guard legers on the bar line up by shimming the bar to match.

On our old JD #9 mower when the plates on the rock guards lined up pretty well but not with the plate riveted on the inner shoe we used to adjust the shims between the shoe and the bar that holds all the rock guards. The plate on the outer shoe may also need a little shimming. Sometimes these adjustments will save quite a lot of pounding and an occasional broken rock guard. Make sure the knife slides easily when it is installed. If there is enough friction to make the hold down clips heat you're in trouble. I've spent a lot of time on these adjustments but it's worth it.

When I replace guards on my 501 I have to pound them up or down to get the correct clearence. So get a big hammer and pound away. Just make sure the sickle bar is out when you pound. Good Luck

Thanks Dave. I figured some pounding was in order somewhere - just didn't know where.
