Late this winter and early this spring I "broke" new ground (old pine plantation) using a 2 disk plow and have been disking to prep for pasture planting (Pensacola Bahia).

Now that this gound has been worked, do you think a 4 disk plow is to much for my Oliver 550 Dsl? Oliver 550 was originally rated as a 3 bottom plow tractor.

I've a chance to buy a 4 disk plow, but don't want to buy something I can't use. The plow is old with about 5" dia. axles for the disks, disks are ~28" but not verified. Has 3pth, made by Taylor-Way.

Thanks,
ShepFL

I don't how a disk plow pulls compared to a moldboard plow. If it is the same then the 4 is too much for a 550. The 3 bottom needed to be set right for a 550 to handle in tough ground (from what I hear--I am too young to have been there). We have a 550 gasser with a 2 bottom we play with. Have never tried 3 bottoms.

What is the total width of cut of the 4 disk plow? I think that it will be about 40" and a 3 - 14" plow is 42" and if you could pull one of those you should be able to pull it too.

I have a jd 3 disk tuning a i live in central ala. red clay land a i have have no trouble pulling this plow with a international 340 utilty gas burner 38 hp to a depth of about 10-12'' deep Disk plow are a far better new ground plows than flatbottom plows are because they cut and roll the soil over with a level just disked field look result. and cut roots man i brought roots as big as my upper leg out of the ground never seen a flatbottom do that without snatching the plow into. flatbottoms need new points all the time it seems like buy one set of disk blades and you good for 20+yrs of plowing unless u bust one.
