Hooked up a seven foot flail mower today and when I brought it up to speed it really vibrated and was very loud. Mows pretty well although I will have to replace a few hammer knives. The main shaft with the knives does not appear to be bent and the bearings seem OK. Vibration seems to subside as it is slowing down. Any ideas on why there is such a bad vibration and remedies?

It's probably all the knives you will have to replace. If one is missing, that'd be more than enough to make it vibrate. As fast as that drum is spinning, it doesn't take too much weight from missing or worn knives. If there are knive missing, replace them and the opposite knives before you mow. Always replace knives in opposite sets. Might be best to start with a whole new set of knives, if they aren't too pricey.
