I have used a New Holland 268 baler with my 8N. A New Holland 68 would work great too! GOOD LUCK!

Well, reading through the other posts, as I should have done first, I'm sorry that I didn't ...

It looks likes the New Holland Super Hayliner 68 would work for you after all. My farm is in northwestern PA - where are you located?

Contact me at if you have any interest - I am currently researching the fair market value of my piece, either for sale or barter/trade.

I am actually a blueberry farmer and am expanding into other fruits and vegetables.

Looking forward to hearing from you on your level of interest.

Greg

I'm not sure if the baler I have will work for you or not ... I have a New Holland, Super Hayliner 68, PTO driven. Let me know if you have any interest and I can e-mail you a pic or two.

Greg

As you have already been told pulling a baler with an 8N is marginal at best. It can be done. However a 8N with a 501 Ford mower is one good combination that will mow with anybody. A good choice of hayrake is the mounted Ford rake. It's very maneuverable in small fields and easy to transport. Years ago we baled with 8n's and little round Allis balers and they did a good job and were near idiot proof which was good for me.

The only successful way I know to bale with a 9N is to use an engine powered baler and to stay on level ground with it. Drop 'em on the ground and forget the wagon behind the baler.

Or, spend a thousand bucks on a usable Farmall H or Allis WD45.

We baled hay when I was a kid with an 8N and a 68 NH baler. Picked up the hay with a second tractor and wagon - the 8N couldn't handle the wagon behind the baler in the hills. The little 8N jumped out of second on a steep down grade once - I was on another tractor raking the other hilltop and just caught glimpses of lids flapping, flashes of bouncing red metal, large clouds of dust, etc. Looked like the Dukes of Hazzard. Rushed down to check the outcome and found the 8N and baler lying on their sides in a large washout - the rear tire of the 8N had made swirling circles in the bottom of the washout, the driver had rode it to a standstill. Pulled it out with a chain, buttoned down all the lids and resumed baling. The baler seemed to be hard on the 8N transmission. Lots of forward/backward rocking in time with the baler plunger. Seemed to help it slip out of second gear easily. I remember that the 8N wouldn't hold back much of a load on a downgrade before the tires started slipping. Not heavy enough in the seat of its pants. I know one thing - if it jumps out of gear, go for the next higher gear immediately. You can forget about getting it back in the gear it jumped out of. Good luck with your project. Stay on level ground if possible!

The 8N will bale hay, but be careful, as the others said, the baler weighs almost as much as the tractor, hard to control.

Also, baling without a live pto is NOT as much fun as baling with live pto. You can do it, but go for the overrunning clutch & make small windrows.

New Holland & JD made good balers 40-50 years ago. You are looking for a JD 14T or New Holland 69, or models like that. Other brands sell for less, but have a much higher probability of giving you lots of problems with missed knots. There is a reason they sell cheaper - what to buy is up to you. :)

Don't know of any for sale right now, but ask around locally, let folks know you're looking... found mine when somebody told me an old retired farmer had one parked in a shed just a mile down the road from me. I went and asked him about it and he said he was tired of tripping over it and practically gave it to me.

Anyway, 'bout half the guys I know said an 8N couldn't bale, and the other half said it could. I've got 19 hilly acres and a small, plain square baler (no kicker, no motor; pto driven). The 8N has adequate power, but be advised most balers weigh more than it does, so sometimes it is a little exciting (like going downhill when the ground is too soft 'cuz she won't stop til the bottom). But my bottom line, an 8N will bale. I've got a Massey Ferguson 10 baler, but anything of about that size would be fine as long as you keep the windrows fairly small.

good luck,
Tom

You best have flat land and an engine on the baler. Baled with an 851 JD 14t pto for many years and it was scary with a full wagon on hills. No thrower, we stacked by hand after the baler.
