What design of round baler is best for making 4x4 sileage bales, fixed chamber roller type or variable chamber belt type? I am more concerned with trouble-free operation than with density. What makes/models are best re. each design? Thanks...

I would be concerned about density. Denser bales contain less air (oxygen) which will reduce baleage quality, especially true in alfalfa. I've used an 851 NH (wider than 4') chain baler but the bales were not dense enough. My dad and I each run NH 650's (belts) these will make up to a 4x6 but do fine set to 4x4. Makes great baleage or great for hay. I made the change after DOT worked me over hauling too wide with the 851 bales (hay). I tried to use dad's 650 for silage before I got my own. Deere makes a good baler in the 535 but this is >4' wide, plus I saved big $$ in our market with the 650. Used, for under $8000 in great shape vs. 12000 for a 535.
