I am in the process of mounting a belly mower on my Farmall A, and I would like to know what the recommended speed is for the blades. I would guess somewhere around 3,000 rpm. Is it better to make them any faster?

Yes, it is better to make them faster. This will allow the blades to have more whacks at the grass blades for every foot of forward travel while mowing. Mow in second gear. On the next pass use first gear. Which swath has the cleaner cut? You permitted the blades to have extra cracks at those nasty grass blades. There are safety considerations to remember if you're gonna jack up the RPM. Dixie Chopper company bills their Z-turn mowers as the fastest mowers in the world. They do this by cranking the foot per minute speed of their blades to somewhere around 18,000 FPM allowing the mower to travel faster and get a good cut quality. This tells me that you shouldn't exceed their time tested FPM rate of 18,000. You probably have (3) 20" blades under your deck. Math tells me that at 3,000 RPM you've got 15,700 FPM of blade tip speed. So you need to get your spindle RPM up to around 3,400 RPM to achieve the 18,000 FPM tip speed. Next to consider--will your A be working real hard to gain that extra RPM and how will it perform in heavy grass? The A has about 18.5 belt HP, so I think it would do OK trying to turn the blades faster. It's neat to tinker with that kind of stuff. Let me know how it turns out.
