Looking for information on a hand fertilizer spreader that looking much like a wheelbarrow. The spreader has a large metal front wheel (approx. 15" in dia.) and two wooden handles. It had a metal box with five or six shoots coming out of the bottom. It operated on cogs on the front wheel. Any info and pictures would be appreciated.
Thanks
Frank B.

I never heard of a fertilizer spreader like you describe, however, seeders of that nature were fairly common. The cog on the front wheel wobbled a shaft back and forth as you walked. The other end of the shaft was attached to a mechanism under the seed box that shook the seed out of metering holes in the box. The seeding rate was controlled by moving the shaft pivot to different holes in a plate, thereby adjusting the amount of wobble and length of stroke to shake out more or less seed. These were typically used for small, fine seed such as grass and alfalfa. The seed boxes were about 10 feet long and made of wood. I imagine a similar arrangement may have been used for a small fertilizer spreader.
