They were built from '72 to '77. They are good balers. Around here, in northeast Oklahoma, one good condition and field ready, would be $3000 to $4000 if wire tie and a little less if twine.

Thmks grm. Could you let me know if this baler had a problem getting hay to the far side of chamber. I am constantly being told it will only make banana bales. I need to be able to make uniform bales as I run a accumulator system. This would be my second baler. It would be alarge capacity baler it appears and it has not seen much use and has always been in shed. The price is right, please give me some feedback.

I have never heard that about the NH 278. I called a friend of mine who is a service manager at a New Holland dealer. He feels that it must be either worn parts or operator error or a combination of both. He is an experienced baler mechanic and tells it like it is regardless of color. My experience with square balers is mostly wire tie. I've only owned one twine tie baler. It might be worth a call your local NH dealer and talking to one of the baler mechanics.I have also hired mechanics to look at a piece of used manchinery I'm thinking about buying. It usually costs me about fifty dollars. Usually they come out after they finish work. Over the the years it has saved me a lot of money and frustration. I don't square bale much anymore but I still have a NH 315W that I use to put up about 200 bales a year. The rest I round bale. I'm sorry I can't be more informitive.

What troubles I've had with NH twine balers making banana bales was pretty simple to fix.

It's always been either a too small windrow, too slow ground speed, or the feeder tines out of adjustment for the type hay I'm making.

The simplest thing to check is if the windrow is too small just roll another round into each one.

If the windrow is big enough for the baler then the feeder tines need adjusted.

Which ever side of the bale is too short loosen the tines and move them about 2" in the opposite direction til you get the feed right.

In other words if the left side of the bale is too short, loosen the tines and move the tines 2" to the right on the bar, try another 3-4 bales and keep moving the tines til it feeds right. and vice versa, if the right side is too short loosen the tines and move them left.
