I'm looking into getting a good hay rake that is between $100-$250. Any good suggestions? On average, how many teeth are on a rake & how much does a tooth cost?

A few years ago, I bought an ancient rubber tired four wheel John Deere rake for $75. It's ugly but reliable. It must have 25 grease fittings on it. The rear caster wheels shimmy like mad on an oil road in road gear. Because it wasn't road friendly, I bought a Farmhand wheel type rake to use off the farm. I gave $200 for it. It is also reliable, but in some hay conditions will roll the hay like a cigarette. Neither of these rakes are "tooth shedders". Last week I started raking with the Farmhand, didn't like the conditions, and switched to the old John Deere. It's nice to have another rake to fall back on in case something busts.

Poor people have poor ways. . .

I have a friend who has a John Deere wheel rake that has sheet metal hay wheels. It sheds teeth all over his farm every time he uses it. I'd stay away from that model.

I'm familiar with NH rakes, the teeth cost $1.20 - $.69 at the various farm supply stores. However, you probably won't find a NH or JD rake for your price. I'd maybe check if you can easily get teeth for an 'off' brand of rake before buying it.

I just purchased a complete new set for my NH 55 rolabar 90 teeth at $0.83 each. If you want a rake for that price though I would look at the import 4 wheel rakes. Do a good job for a good price

HFI in Kansas.
Hay and Forage Industries is a joint venture between Case/NH and Agco for the hay equipment. Hesston is made there, Case balers and such are made there and some Massey hay equipment i think is made there yet.

Since the CaseIH/NH merger, HFI is 100% Agco now. No more CaseIH hay equipment.
