Anyone got any tips on how to weigh down a small 5
1/2 foot no name disk harrow. I've got pretty
thick sod, but I bet I could chop it if I could
just get a little more downdraft on the thing. The
back discs just kind of roll. I twisted the top
link out pretty far, with only maginal improvement.

Thanks

Pete

I'm just in the middle of disking 14 acres of old farm land with a 7 1/2 foot A&B disk harrow hooked to my Jubiliee's 3 pt. If you haven't turned over that sod with a plow before disking you're going to have a rough time of it. I got myself an old Ferguson 2-bottom for $250 and plowed up the sod first. Even with plowing I need to make several passes with the disk to get the ground looking good. Even then there's old grass poking through. My farmer neighbor suggests I keep disking right through the summer to really work the ground and break up the roots and destroy the weeds. Then I'm going to chain drag for smoothness and seed for a horse pasture. The disk weighs over 800 lbs but to get it to really dig in I had to add 320 lbs more by strapping on four 80 lb bags of cement, for a total of about 1100-1200 lbs. The cement bags are lashed onto a couple of 2x12 planks that I mounted on top of the disk frame. The heavy weight really lightens the front end of the Jubilee and the steering is pretty marginal, forcing me to make wide turns. The hydraulics only have enough power to raise the disk until the disk blades lightly touch the ground with the 3 pt. fully raised. After disking all day Sunday we got hit with 2 days of drenching rain here in Western NY. Now my cement bags are solid weights (which makes 'em easier to handle) but my land is soaked. Figure I'll do a little brush hogging on some other areas until things dry out a bit. Otherwise, the Jube' will get stuck for sure.

Walt,

I'm also in WNY. That sod is something else! I can
almost see it growing. I managed to get a couple
of acres of grapevines planted, but the middle
rows (tractor path) are still a mess. I like the
idea of continuous disking. I've got turf tires on
my Jubilee, but I should have chains next week.
That should help a lot.

Pete -
Get yourself a used steel 55 gal. drum, small hank of chain with hook on one end and a chain binder, and a self tapping petcock valve.

After installing the petcock valve in lower outside wall, center the EMPTY drum on the harrows between the two upper supports. Take your chain and hook it to one upright, wrap around barrel to other side and TIGHTEN in place using binder. Now hook up to tractor, get close to garden hose and fill barrel thru factory bung hole on top.

H2O = about 8.5lb/gal; 55gal*8.5 = 467.5lb max, with valve can be adjusted to match your needs.

Be prepared to make alot of passes with that small set!! As an added benefit, you can make some really sharp turns (use CAUTION) and if barrel is properly cleaned before hand, you can transport water to hard to those reach areas of your garden/property. Once empty remove and store for the next season. I started out this way & I now have 3 of these sitting on a rented 8' disk. HAPPY DISKING and KEEP CHUGGIN!

I used a couple 5 gallon buckets filled with lead wheel balancing weights from my local tire dealer. Full they weigh about 200#. Fastened them down with several rubber tarp straps. Your rear gang will probably not penetrate like the front, except in loose soft sand. It is the nature of the beast. Be careful about loading the disk too heavy. I found myself trying to steer with the brakes when I had the disk up.
