How many knife clips on Ford 501 sicklebar?

Bought an old Ford 501 sicklebar mower at auction last year. Ordered the reprint manual from New Holland and 'tuned it up' per the book. It cuts fairly well, but not great, though some of that is my 'volunteer' hay.

But it occured to me that there may not be enough knife clips holding the blade down...seems like there's a big gap in the middle of the blade without any. The manual doesn't say how many there should be, and the pictures are not good enough to tell. How many clips are there supposed to be, and what is the spacing on them?

thanks,
Tom

Tom, I just got mine ready for another season of cutting. I do believe I have 5 clips on mine spaced evenly apart. Since you have a gap in the middle it sounds like you have one missing. As for good cutting make sure the knife register is set properly. Also the knife to ledger plate clearance is set properly and of course sharp knives and good ledger plates. Good Luck

Thanks Dave.

I just went out and counted...there's only 3 on there right now. If the spacing is supposed to be equal, the ones that are there are spaced so that 2 would fit exactly in the big gap in the middle. Guess this might explain the trouble I had last year with grass clumping in the blade.

thanks again!
Tom
