How big of job is it seperate the rear half of a Farmall A to replace the axle seal. I have a slow leak from the weep hole and assume the seal is bad.Should I replace the bearingwhile its apart?
Thanks for your help.

I just finished replacing the seal on the left side of the transmission of my A. It is as easy as David A says. However, there are two possible sources of a oil leak from the left weep hole. The transmisission is one, but there is an oil seal between the brake and the upper bearing on the final drive. If either of these seals are leaking on the left side you will eventually notice that the left break doesn't work well. For some reason those dry break assemblies don't seem to work well when coated with oil. That is the reason I had to repace the oil seal. If the right side is the problem I would try to live with it. The oil wont effect the right brake, and what is an old tractor without at least one oil leak. David A is correct on the problem of supporting the tractor to get at the right side of the transmission.

Good Luck and make sure that you support the tractor well no matter which side you are working on.

Is this one of the axle seals in the side of the transmission? The left side is fairly easy-just remove the final drive assembly and you are looking at the seal. On the right side also remove the final drive but then remove the fender, seat, and right axle tube extension. The tricky part about doing the right side is supporting the tractor. Unless you hear a bad bearing, I'd just replace the seal. These commonly go bad. You might also post this Q on the farmall board.
Be carefull,
David
