Bush hogging a hay field

I read a lot of peoples comments on cutting out the left side of my mower to cut hay. Enough people swore by it tempt me to trying it. I am wondering if anyone has tried it with both a conventional sickle bar mower and a bush hog and did they notice any reduction in the volume of hay they took off the field. I was not pleased with what I took off my field but we were really hurting for rain for some time and that may have been the cause.

Thanks,
Jeff

I've tried this a little; not much luck myself. Someone told me you need to run less RPM than normal. Matt

I've read here about people cutting out the side of their brush hog to mow hay. My Woods 6' hog has a removable side, and i tried it both ways. Here in Mi., i have trouble getting my hay to dry fast enough, and after trying it both ways, i like the hay mowed much better with the side left on. I've tried hogging with nicely sharpened blades, and with dull blades, and i can't see any difference either way. The only thing that's made any difference is to go back and forth instead of around the field. I get a cleaner cut this way. It helps to mow some of the hay left behind because one tire ran it over. For me, i like hogging the hay much better than useing my sickle bar mower. Hope this helps, Robert

Last years crop of hay was pretty bad because of lack of rain, and I yet to get my hay out this year because of rain...,, I use a sickle mower and I learned to keep it very sharp, how I cut with it,, speed etc... and also the angle of the blade,, all from posts in this link,, I dont get many clogs... my Dad tried last year with his bush hog to cut hay,, it was much faster, but much less yield than mine,, and not as far down... I wish I had a disc mower as well, but my sickle mower is working very well, I dont think I would get as good results using my bush hog...
good luck

Jeff,
i'm no expert on this, but. the bushhog can't help but cut some of the grass into finer clippings, plus unless you have very even ground, i dont' think the hog will cut as close on an average. with the shorter clippings the rake and the baler may not pick up as much of the grass. 5% here 10% there 7% here well you get the picture.

sure, the hay cut with a bush hog is going to be shorter because of the way it cuts. that's all i have to cut my hay and when compared to hay cut with a disc mower there is a very noticible difference in yield. the disc mower, in my opinion is the best for cutting hay, but i don't have one so i have to make do with what i have. i used to use a sickle mower, but it clogs too much and spent more time unclogging it than i did mowing. just keep the front of the bush hog down and the rear up so the cut hay can exhaust out fast without too much chopping. i cut my bush hog left side panel all the way from the front left side to the back past the tail wheel to where the right panel starts. that gives plenty of room for the hay to fly out fast.
