I am looking at hay rakes. When I farmed in college we used rakes without dolly wheels, but now I am looking to buy a new rake. What are the opinions of dolly wheels? I plan to use my Farmall B to rake as well as a 656 if needed.

Around here, dolly wheel rakes are vastly more popular...especially for JD or NH brands. The dolly will double the sale price of a rake over the price of one with a jack. Since most of the jackstands are junk, it is understandable that the ease of hooking up to a dolly wheel rake is a factor. My JD640 is the "mounted" variety and it's jack is long since broken and missing. It is a pain to hook up. Once hooked up, it does as good a job as any other rake.

If you have milk cows and are worried about protine & other stuff like that, don't git one with dollies or use a narrow front tractor. it will cause leaf loss. but if you just have steers, sheep or beef cows it won't matter i pull a old old McCormick rake with a nf B John Deere & am happy with the results but I have beef cows and steers

Although my old rakes don't have dolly wheels, my buddy's New Holland rake has them and I like it. I guess it would be hard to back up, but then I don't have a need to back up much.

I think Dolly wheels are the best thing a Rake can have, most Rakes dont have a jack and if they do it junk. With dolly wheels one man woman or child can hookup a Rake to a tractor. Also you can move it by hand if you need to get it out of the way and dont want to hook a tractor to it, and best of all, it will always do a better job of raking.

I have a rake with dolly wheels. They are a life saver for me because I work uneven ground and w/o them the tines of the rake would be pushed into the ground everytime i drove over a dip or a hump.

I never used a dolly, so maybe I'm a poor judge.

I feel it's an extra set of wheels pressing the alfalfa into the ground. If you have irregular shaped fields, harder to back up & manuver around.

Since I use my rake on an IH 300 with fasthitch or Ford 960 with 3-point hitch, I adjust the hight of the rake with the tractor hitch, and would not want a dolly.

On the ranch I used to work on before i came up here we used a JD rake with a dolly wheel if your ground isn't smooth, it isn't worth the headache.I pull an old IH rake behind my B with no dolly wheels with no problems.
