Baler belt lacing...

Couldn't find this question with a search so it must be obvious to everyone but me... - replacing a couple of belts on a MF (Vermeer) round baler (belt type). Getting the lacing into the belt - no problem - threading the belt into the baler - no problem - making that plastic coated cable bend and thread back into the trailing edge of the splice so it'll stay put - big problem. What's the trick of threading that inch of cable back into the lace without tearing up the plastic coating or spreading the leading edge so bad it won't go in at all - maybe a tool I don't know about?

I've tried various sizes/types of needle nose pliers with damage to the plastic covering and my future in eternity so I have to be doing something wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

When we lace belts we start at the front of the baler work the belt through the bottom and to the back about chest high. Then take the other end and work around the top till they meet. This way you don't have to pull the belt all the way through the baler. Put the lacing cable in (don't tuck in ends yet). Put the tension back in the belts. Hold a eight penny nail in a pair of vice grips sharp end out. Heat the nail with a torch and burn a grove in both ends of the belt where you want to tuck the cable in. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and work the cable in now. This does not hurt the belts. We are a Vermeer dealer and have been doing this for years

I know a friend of mine that doesn't use the little cables, he uses a piece of the plastic line that you use in weedeaters. He just slides it through, leaves 1/2" or so sticking out each end, and voila, he's done. I don't know the diameter of the line he uses, or the life that he gets, but maybe it'll let some guys at least finish a field before the next rain when they're out of cable..... ..

New Holland uses little ferrules crimped onto the ends of the lace cable. No folding, and you can crimp them close to the last hook to keep them from spreading. Trim the lace cable shorter than the trailing edge, if you use ferrules.

Thanks Rick - New Holland always has a better idea don't they. I finally figured out that my new and improved hook vise lets the belt set too 'deep' on the hooks to leave room for the lace cable 'lock loop' to fit - on the one I had already done I used a small drill bit to remove some of the belt - on the other 2 I used a small wire piece to give more room when crimping the hooks into the trailing edge - much easier to get the 'lock loop' in - now hope the hooks hold in the belt.

At least the baler still has the same old magic. Just hooking up to it to move it around has put rain in the weather forcast for the next 4 days....
