I want to buy a mower to cut my lawn as well as occaisionally cut down tall weeds in a field. I don't understand the advantages/disadvantages of each type of mower. For example, clearly a Rotary cutter can handle cutting down tall weeds but can I use it also to cut my lawn and get a decent cut? I'm guessing a finishing mower would leave a better cut but can it handle weeds? I don't have a clue what a flail mower is best at. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time. Dave

I would invest in a finish mower. I have a 6ft. rear discharge Bush Hog. It cuts just as good as a lawn mower of the same width and will still cut some weeds and tall grass if you take your time at it. It will not cut weeds and brush like a rotary mower, but is not intended for that purpose.

It would help to know what kind of tractor you have.

A finishing mower will come the closest to a lawn mower.

You can get a decent cut with a rotary mower, but you can't cut very short.

I would be using the mower with a Ford 860, so I'd want a 3pt pto arrangement.
Thanks

If i was buying it, AND you only want to cut weeds and grass, i'd buy a Woods REAR DISCHARGE finish mower. They do a nice job on grass, and will mow even heavy weeds just fine. Even small willows won't hurt it, but for my $$ it would be the rear discharge model. A rotary cutter (brush hog) just won't do a nice job on your lawn. Robert
