Is a Mower-Conditioner necessary for 10 acres of alfalfa or is it just a big mechanical headache, and a simple Deere 350 Sickle mower all you need. Central Illinois where showers do occur and humidity can be high.

Grass hay maybe. Legume hay yes. The leaves will dry before the stems unless the stems are cracked.

I only had a Ford 501 mower for years & years, did 6 acres of alfalfa & 10 acres of hay here in Minnesota. It works. No problem.

Last year I got a 1209 mo-co, and am doing 10-12 acres of alfalfa. It works better.

Still not sure if the extra expense & fuel will pay off on my acres, but there are more leaves on better alfalfa in the barn.

Either will make hay. If you have trimmimg & grass hay & so forth also, I'd suggest starting with the mower, add a mo-co if you find a good deal?
