I've purchased a field roller. You fill it with water to add weight. The roller is 36 inches in diameter and 8 feet long. How many gallons will it hold? Also, how much does a gallon of water weigh? I've been told 8 pounds to the gallon, but am not sure if that's correct. I've been out of school too long! Somebody help, PLEASE!

Use Ford Man's volume figure and multiply that by 8.34 lbs/gal of water. Add the weight of your cylinder for total roller weight. Assuming 1/4" wall thickness of the cylinder and end plates, I come up with 913 lbs for the roller weight w/o water.

Kermit,
1 cubic foot of water = 7.48 gallons

The volume of your tank is 56.556 cu ft . ( Pi x ( radius squared ) x height )

56.556 cu ft. = 423 gallons

1 gallon of water weighs 8.336 lbs @ 62 degrees

Therefore , the water in your tank would weigh right at 3,526 lbs.

Of course these calculations are only approximate because we do not know the wall thickness of your tank .

Thanks , I finally got to use some of the math from High School !

The volume of your cylinder is pi x r squared x heigth or in your case 97,666 cubic inches. One gallon of water is approximately 6x6x7= 252 cubic inches, so your cylinder contains roughly 387 gal. If one gallon of water weighs about 8 pounds (you might check that 8 pound figure) then your cylinder will hold 3096 pounds.

hope that helps
Tom

Apart from the math (well done), water in the roller will rust the interior until the oxygen in that fill is depleted- relatively little rusting. But winter demands draining the tank in freezing weather. Will rust when temp is above 50 and humidity above 50% even when empty. Many of the grading contractors fill their sheepfoot with diesel fuel to eliminate both problems. Diesel fuel is a bit lighter than water.

And a lot more expensive! I don't think the EPA would like it if you sprung a leak, either. How about filling it with water and some of the new non-toxic RV antifreeze? Also expensive, but not as much of a worry if you spill some. . . .
