Just bought an IH 230 windrower today at an auction. Was looking for a rake but the windrower was $100 more than a nh55 side delivery rake. Figured this would be better than the sickle and rake as it is one pass. Also thought about a haybine but the hay guys around here say a swather is the best. Also it has a conditioner so it should dry down alfalfa better. Can also swath my weedy mixed grain before combining. Has a four cyl. IH engine. Lever steering ... no cab, 12 ft header. Has new drive belts and apron belts new cutter knives but needs some work on the pitman. Hope to be cutting 17 acres of hay by the end of the week.

AJZ, i'm with Burrhead, i replaced the side windows with cheap plastic sheet (styrine?) from lowes. you need the dust tight cab and filtered pressurised air like burrhead said. i have a NH 1469 which is old as dirt. it is very loud because of all the belts below the cab. it is very fast cutting with little time wasted in turning at the corners. you can get into corners of fields with none left uncut. once you run a selfpropelled you will not want to go back to a pull type. look it over well, NH parts are gold plated.

AJZ I just answered you on the otherpost.

I would be leery of the 1495 unless it is in imaculate condition. They quit building them in 1985 so it's probly wore down pretty good.

On the other hand if it's in good shape you could get spoiled to using it, but they do take alots of up keep. They need to be shedded and don't be stingy with the grease and oils.

I just finished talking to a guy in Wisconsin.
He is sellin one and sent me an email with all of the main parts and conditions. It has turf tires a 12 foot head a cab with air rollers are rubber on rubber both are in very good condition the gearbox is good along with driveline the frame and sheet metal are very good and excelent the drive train is very good along with engine front tires are 50% the knives are good cutterbar is good the cab and paint are also good so overall that one is good. He wants $1995 The next is questionable this is the original one i was talking about. has turf tires a 12 foot header no air took out 2 windows conditioner is also rubber on rubber both rolls are fair gearbox and driveline are fair the frame and sheetmetal are good drive train and engine are good doesnt mention tires or knives the cutterbar is fair the reel is fair the cab is good except two side windows missing and the paint is fair.

I would vote for the one in Wisc if it's close enough to get it home cheap.

No matter which one I decided on tho, I would go and have the feller run it a round or 2 while I watched and then run it a round or 2 myself to see for myself if it was up to snuff.

If A/C is a main concern you can add a roof mount truck type for about $600 around here, or pick up the parts at a truck junk yard and do it yourself for about $200 or less.

A/C would be nice cause with a self propelled mower you are right there at the dust all the time.

Another option to keep the dust out is to cut a 4" round hole in the back, and put a squirrel cage fan drawing air in through and old semi truck air cleaner and keep the windows and doors closed. The fresh air will blow across you and help cool you, plus with the cab closed the fan will keep the dust pressured out from entering the cab with you.
