I need information on 270, 273, 276, 310, 311, and 315 balers. I need to know when they were made, how reliable they were, how much HP you need to have to use them and general baling experiences with them like were they consistent and son.
Thanks, a information is appreciated.

Re: New Holland Balers in reply to AJZ, 06-23-2001 06:22:20
Is there anyone who may be able to help me on two points.
I have recently purchased a New Holland baler 276 in what I beluieve to be reasonable condition apart from the three upper hay dogs which were seized.
I removed the knotter unit and set about renewing the springs and freeing the hay dogs which was done sucessfully.
However, I do not have a manual and donot know how to time the knotter unit to the baler itself. The only chain taken off is from the knotter unit itself.
Questions:
1. Where can I find a copy of a 276 manual?
2. Who do you time the knotter to the baling machine?

I would appreciate any help in the above two areas.

Regards

276 and 311 are the better machines in my opinion. the feeder can be adjusted for better shape bales.

I had a NH 273 baler which we purchased new. Don't remember the year, but sometime in the early 70's. It was very reliable and made good bales. Had very, very little trouble with it. Finally sold it to a friend as we no longer do any square bales. Only large round. My friend still uses the baler to bale part of his hay.

All of these balers were very reliable and probably have more capacity than other brand balers of similar size. The one area that needs to be checked and maintained regularly is the cross feeder assembly that brings the hay into the bale chamber. The large roller chain that drives the feeder needs to be checked for tension regularly and should be adjusted so that there is no more than 5/8" deflection at the midpoint between the sprockets. If this tension is not maintained, the feeder has a tendency to whip and the chain can break from the force, causing the feeder fingers to actually poke right through the side or top of the baler. The links should also be inspected for cracks and if any are found, the entire chain should be replaced. These balers are generally very reliable and should perform well if these checks are followed.

These are all smaller balers, small bales that is, 14x16. In our area we have mostly the bigger 2 tie or 3 tie bales. I had a 280 which is the big brother to the 270, a wire tie baler but worked good even though it had had a lot of hard use prior to me getting it. I berlieve with the 276 on they were speaded up, possibly the 273 also. They should all be good balers.

The 270 must have been made in the early '60s. Mine is a good one, no problems at all. Must have 100,000 bales & only general maintanence, misses a knot every 500 bales or so. Someone here got one & thought it was a lower capacity baler, which it is, but since I'm the one on the hayrack stacking them, it can spit out bales as fast as I want to work!!!!!

That's right Paul. The 270 was built from 1-1-1961 to 12-31-1963 and they are a dang good baler.
