what is the difference between notched and plain disc? does on cut better than the other, I have heard the notched disc takes more hp to pull.

Notched discs cut better and dig deeper. Having the weight of the disc on a smaller surface area (the top of the notch) applies more pressure per square inch so it penetrates and cuts better than plain round discs. They work better for cutting up stubble,weeds, etc. They take a little more power because they are DOING more than a plain disc. Sometimes a disc will be set up with notched on the front gang and plain on the back for more of a finish.

Also, all things being equal (same thickness, etc.), the notched ones will wear out faster and cost a little more.

Yes the scallop disc take a little more hp to pull but they cut through sod and roots pretty good.

The finish disc are more for work on tilled ground and the scallop are more for digging into tough ground.
