I tried a test run baling this week and my baler will not tie properly, it ties slip knots and tangles up, I cleaned and oiled everything taking the knotter apart and making everything spotless, and it still does it, I tried running about 20 bales through to see if it needed to shine up but no difference, the bilhooks have grooves in them from the twine, toes this indicate anything? I have a manual coming but the hay is ready and I need to bale! do I need to adjust something? do I need to replace something? thanks for any help. WP

Thanks for all the info, I had my little brother fork hay into the baler last night while I watched how it was working, I did a few obvious adjustments, sharpened the twine knives again and got it to tie but it still ties slipknots, I found this was caused by the bill hooks not holding the knot long enough to pull the end of the twine through, it just slips over the little hook, it is quite worn in this area so I will replace them and see if that helps, also I was using plastic twine since it was laying around and I wanted to get rid of it, I will try sisal tomorrow. I got to ask a question. Did you go through the settings and adjust the twine disk tension, the twine tension and the billhook pressure when you changed twines? If not then it is a miracle that it tied the first knot. Each of these different twines have different size and friction characteristics that require adjusting the baler for each type. Pick your prefered and stay with it otherwise you will have problems or get a manual and set up the baler each time you change twine types!!!

What kind of twine are you using ?

My MF 124 was giving me fits until I threw out the poly twine I'd bought this year and went back to Sisal.. that baler had run Sisal all it's life and I think it was just 'worn in' to match the Sisal's thickness.

Also it sure was nice just to trim a piece of the sisal off and just drop it in the field...

I've got mounds of cut poly bale ties laying around here and could spend the rest of my days picking up the stray pieces from the field.

I have a Model 27, I had knotting problems until I adjusted both the position of the twine knife and the twine tension, but you'll need the manual to get those right. Look closely how the twine is stretched between the bill hook and the disk when the knife cuts it, knife has to be right there and the twine has to be tight enough to cut cleanly but not so tight it jams on the bill hook. If one side ties use it as a guide for the other.

I just got a 37 baler and fixed it all up. Works like a charm so far. No missed knots. I have several manuals too. I can scan some pages and send you the info to adjust your baler. Give me your e-mail in reply.

I've had several 37's and 47's, all "reasonably
priced". They work, but they aren't a New Holland,
which I'm now finding out isn't a John Deere. A
couple of things come to mind. The IH balers just
wouldn't tie if you try to make the bales too
tight. You might try loosening up and see if that
helps. Secondly, make sure your twine knives are
sharp. If they don't cut the twine cleanly, ugly
things happen. This is all from memory, I had a
manual but it went down the road with the last 37.
Mine really tied well most of the time. Good luck.

Whitepark I know absolutely nothing about a IH baler.

But if a NH has twine grooves in the bill hooks like you explained it will tie ok, but it won't release the twine or cut it off for the next bale.

A NH billhook will keep hanging onto the twine and won't cut off the twine or spit the twine out off of the billhooks after it ties ok.
