I am trying out a 501 mower from a friend. I barely get into the hay when the breakback triggers. Is the mower supposed to ride on the ground? I have a Ford 2N and it is difficult to get the right height. Any recommendations?

The best adjustment that you could possible make to a Ford 501 is to sell it and try to find a Ford 515. The Ford 515 is the best belt cycle bar mower I have ever seen and I have three of my own. If I owned a 501 again I would find a 12 inch pulley, and replace the 10.5 inch one to make up for the old slow pittman arm, that breaks all the time. This pulley is the one that connects with the P.T.O shaft.

Most of the mower weight will be on the big spring that hooks to your top link. You need to adjust this spring so there is about 80 lbs on the inner shoe. The other spring on the bottom of the mower will adjust the outter shoe weight, it should be 20-40 lbs. Your 3 pt lever should be completely down when you are mowing. The weight of the mower is on these springs. You definitely need to get a manual for this mower there are a ton of other adjustments that need to be made for it to work properly. Good Luck

Let me ask a couple of questions. Did you hook up the spring to the top link? If so is the weight of the mower sitting on this spring or will the mower sit all the way on the ground? The two shoes on either end of the cutter bar is all that is supposed to touch the ground when mowing, none of the frame. That mower will fit the 2N and mow fine. BTW The manuals for the mower are still available from FNH for less than $10 and are well worth it.

Regarding the manual for the 501 Ford sickle mower; you referenced "FNH". Can you tell me what that means, and where I could order this manual?

Thanks Frank Jewell

For the breakback problem, I think you need to adust the breakout spring latch. There is a bolt under the rail on the sickle bar side of the mower that can be tighten to achieve proper tension.
As far as proper height for the mower, the inner shoe should be just riding on the ground. Since the 2N does not have position control on the lift, I recommend checking out the N board for the Zane Thing. From what I've read, it will give the 2N and 9N position control without modifiying the tractor.

If that mower is setup properly you do not need position control. Let it down until the weight rests on the spring system attached to the toplink. I have position control on my 2000 and always mow in draft mode just because it is easier to raise to the max and lower to the max.
