I am interested in possibly purchasing an IH 430 baler from a private party. First of all, is thirty PTO horsepower and a Live PTO enough power to run this baler profitably (Kubota L3450 4wd) ? Also, are parts available? What years was this model produced, and is it a quality machine? What are typical weak points and places to inspect?

Thank you for your help in any way,
Sincerely, Kenneth Strawn

These are good balers. My wifes grandfather used one for years and it worked without many issues. I just bought an IH 430 baler last year. It is in good shape. I have baled about 1000 bales with it and have had no problems. Mine is a wire tie baler. When using it, I have not had it miss one bale. Just like any other baler, look it over to make sure the parts that wear are in descent shape. Price would depend on where you are located. I have seen them range from $400 to $1600. The shape it is in would also demand the price. About tractor size, I pull mine behind a Farmall 340 diesel. It is rated at around 35-38 HP and pulls it fine. It would be nice to have a few more HP though. I have a JD 14t (PTO driven). It pulls alot easier behind a smaller tractor. They were designed for a 25 and up tractor I think. They guy I bought the 14t from used it behind a JD B. I would look for a MF 3 or 12. They were good balers or at least the ones my father in law had worked good for years. There are probably many opinions on balers out there though.

Neighbor has a 440 and a 445, has no problems getting parts for them through CaseIH dealer.

The 430 was made from 1972-77 so parts might be a
problem. You should call a CIH dealer and ask if
there are going to be problems with parts. Your
tractor seems a little small in HP and for pulling
a 3000 pound baler as well. If time and speed are
not a problem then I guess it's a go. I think you
might want to look for a motor baler like a JD14T
or something similar in the JD or New Holland line
because their parts are easier to get.

What kind of price are they asking for this baler?
It better be cheap because IH balers don't have a good reputation. I don't know much about that particular model, but some of the older IH balers had knotter problems. In our area you can buy a good older New Holland or John Deere baler for around $500. I think that would be a better option.

I just got a New Holland 68 hayliner today! The guy I got it from had just replaced a ton of parts on it last year and never got to use it.He replaced all the pick up tines , wheel bearings, spindles, tires, and a bunch more. I got it for $600. He got it from the original owner who never had any major problems with it. Just the usual wear items that are normally expected. New Holland seems to take care of people who have the older models by keeping replacement parts available. My baler was built between 1956-1959. The other good thing is there are a ton of them out there so picking up one for parts is not too difficult.Since I have old IH McCormick Deering tractors , a 10-20 and an F-12, I would have liked to found an IH baler but there are not a lot of balers around here anymore that are worth a flip. Most are wore out or were stored badly.Since I am planning on using mine, I went with something common and easy to get parts for. I also got lucky and found it less than a mile away!

I've got a ih 430 with a #15 thrower and it's a great baler no problems except have to use heavy good twine or the thrower rollers will break the twine. I've had a john deere 14t and 24t, and wouldn't want another J.D.. I have no problem getting parts, what few i've needed.I use a IH 656 60 h.p tractor and wouldn't want anything smaller on this baler, because fuller you keep the 430 the better it works, I rake 2 windrows together and move right along.
