I am mowing hay that is about 3 feet tall with a #5 JD mower. What I would like to know is what is the trick to keeping the grass from falling out and over the grass board and grass stick when mowing on a steep hill side with the mower bar down hill? Everything works just fine on the level or when the mower bar is up hill. Thanks Steve

Steve, whenever I mow on a steep hill with the sickle I split the hill and mow so the bar is on
the uphill side. I feel safer with the weight up
hill and the hay falls over and downhill like
dominoes. Mowing with the bar downhill is just
impossible in tall hay as you know.

i removed the left side of the bush hog so the hay will exit out fast w/o getting chopped up too much. also i have set the "hog" with the front low to the ground and the rear up as high as i can get it with the tail wheel still on the ground. i know several guys in my area that do it this way. also the hay cures quicker. i can cut my bahia grass one day and let it cure one day and rake and roll it on the third day. works for me.

My Dad used to give me a pitchfork and say " get up on that sidehill and pitch that hay away from the next swath." I also had to run over and pitch the hay off the knife every time it got plugged up. This was in addition to "pitching off the back swath", and clearing the ends of the point swaths when he got into the center of the piece. I am very happy to be mowing with a haybine these days, and my kids would be too, if they knew what they were missing.

now you get the idea why us old timers would be walking around during hay cutting season talking to ourselves and answering ourselves and carrying a Bible..It is a problem!
