Broke wing off 20' finishing disk and wondering how to fix?

Now I've done it. Broke my neighbors 20' finishing disk that he let me use for the summer. The steel box beam that holds the port side rear disk gang fatigued and broke off while doing a left turn. The failure point is outboard of the main disk gang and just before the hinge coupling that supports the foldable port side disk gang wing. Wondering whether this is a weldable situation or whether it would be better to simply replace the box beam. Thanks.

Point blank ask if a repair is OK. How old is the disk? Will the repari exceed 50% of the value. Offer to buy the disk, fix it the way you want and give yur friend lifetime loan. Will you weld it or hire an experienced welder? Offer to warranty it 1 year. If it costs $300 to weld and $500 to replace, is it worth $200 to jeopardize your friendship? Did you receive any instruction on how to turn corners? Examine the fracture, is there rust in the break? How about the other side, is there a similar failure?

If you wrecked my disk you would be replacing the beam. You borrowed you fix it. and repair so it is in better shape than when you borrowed it, Be careful with other peoples property.

Hi, Will, for what it's worth; I broke the square tubeing tongue in my IH haybine, several years ago, had a piece of pipe in the junk pile that fit snuggly inside the square tubing, about five feet long. opened up several holes along the four sides and welded the pipe to the tubing, filling the holes up and grinding them smoth, as with the break. After painting, you can't even see the repair. In this instance there were no bolt holes to worry about, if your disc has no bolts through the square tubing, this method of repair takes care of the problem of metal fatigue, and does not make for a "messy" looking repair job, which the lender may appreciate, Lots of luck, and hope this helps out a little, Have a gooder,

R.E.L.

Assuming this is a wheel disk, it is best to lift these before turning. They do tend to dig in & break otherwise. Don't mean to preach after the fact, maybe helps someone else.

I would ask the owner if he wants it welded or replaced. A horse a piece most of the time...

Your right, I did notice it digging in a bit but I figured I was okay because I was running a bit up on the wheels to avoid bogging the tractor. I wouldn't think 20 hours of disking would fatigue the box beam that quickly so I'm assuming there was a lot of cummulative fatigue in this old harrow. Not that this matters because I'm still going to offer to fix it.

Since I need to use the disk for another month (working a 16 acre plot once a week for pasture seeding in mid-August) I'm definately going to fold up the wings and raise the harrow high when cornering 90 degrees or more. Don't want any thing else breaking.

It will probably be best to get some more square tubing. You will have to drill some holes, I'm sure. The break you describe is also probably weldable. If you are hiring someone to do it, the expense will more than likely outweigh the time it takes to replace the tubing. Show it to your friend who loaned you the disk and ask his opinion. As farmers we all see some awful looking breaks. They are always fixable. Good luck. BTW, I borrowed my brothers 5288 Int. tractor last week. The turbo-charger burned out and burned up both air filters. We didn't know that the air filters were on fire until about an hour later. The tractor kept on smoking out the exhaust stack. When I realized that the tractor was on fire, I found out I could still run pretty good for an old man.
