Blades stopped turning. Shear Pin ok, PTO ok. Don't have manual and looking for ideas on possile problem and how to repair. There is/was no grinding noise that would suggest a gearbox problem. Any help greatly appreciated.

Are you saying that the input drive shaft to the gear box turns but the blades do not turn?

through his wife Larry replys:
Yes, that is correct. If this is a gear problem, does anyone know if it is possible to replace gears inside box, and not have to replace the entire gear box?

Yep the 600 has replaceable gears and they go out at least every 2 to 3 years for no apparant reason.

Both gears and the seals cost around $120 around here. The cogs are held on by snap rings and they just slip on and off with a wheel puller or sometimes they slip off by hand pressure.

Tell your hubby if he needs the pix just email me and I'll ship them. The cogs just spline on the shafts so it's no biggy to fix, just aggravating as the dickens.

Howse has a web site complete with a parts list.
http://www.howseimplement.com/index.html (I still have not figured out how to make the URL active.)

If the input shaft turns and the output shaft (ie the blades) does not, it could be one of at least 3 things. 1. the gear(s) stripped out. But you said there was no grinding noise. 2. Either the input shaft or the output shaft broke inside the gearbox. 3. If the gears are on keyed shafts, a key could have sheared off or otherwise come out. I have a Howse 6' rotary cutter however it is about 30 miles away and I don't remember exactly what the gear box looks like. If you can order the parts from Howse and you have the tools, I don't see any reason you could not repair it yourself. In any event, sounds like you need to take it apart and determine the problem.
