Hi, Doug, wellcome, you have come to the right place for info, these folks here are super! A lot of things dictate how you do your farm work, the first being; how do YOU want to do it, what do YOU think is the best way. The way you discribe how others are cutting thier hay could very well be their own decision, not saying that there is not an underlying reason, like, was the hay blown down by wind? then it MIGHT be best to cut it into the direction the wind came from, so the cutter head lifts the down crop a little before cutting, or maybe the slope of the ground is such that either up and down the incline is better than trying to follow the contour. People cutting Canola in this country sometimes cut so the swathes are aligned with the prevailing wind, looks rather odd to see a whole field [50/60/100 acres] all cut on the diagnal. Sometimes on a very small field or/and odd size, cutting one way might be the answer, lots of variables, even the type of equipment you have can make a difference in how you procede, as in, how short will the tractor turn, and how easy, will the type of cutter you are using let you turn short? On pointy fields this becomes an issue, if you don't want to drive needlessly over the already cut hay. Also, working towards making it easyer for the next implemnt, ie rake/baler, I never eject a big round bale on a corner, need the extra room for the next round. Certainly do not want to discourage you, all this, just makes it more interesting, AND, above all, I, do NOT, have all the answers, just do what you think best, and as you have already done, ask questions! Hope you will enjoy your new venture, R.E.L.
