Did the old Ford balers become the New Holland model? If the NH baler is commented on alot as desirerable so an old Ford in good condition would be the same or did advancement make the NH what it is?

Not all people have a big cash flow some of us farmers buy M.F.,I.H. ford balers they work.we can still get parts for these balers and make some money. We just do not have the bragging rights like the John deere and newholland owners have.WE make a living with the equipment that we can afford if it pay the bills that what counts.

the ford balers were built and manufactured in fords dearborn plant in michigan. fords are a good reliable baler fro the smaller farmer. around the bigger sates were alfalfa was a big crop they werent as good because you couldnt feed them as fast. ford balers out number newholland and jd combined here in marshfield. there are 12 that i know of in my neighbor hood, i have one that was bought new in 70 and have baled 6000 or more bales with it ever year. so lets see 6000 bales a year for..... 30 years that would be 180,000 sq.bales baled by a ford 530 baler. my neighbor has one that has baled more then that. the knotters are so wore that they rust up in the winter and it will miss a few bales but after that few it will bale better then a new one until you let it set again for 3 or more days. the ford balers were and are probley still the most reliable baler around. i would go for the ford baler if i was you. you cant bale as fast but with a sq. baler youy dont want to get ahead of your self on those 90 degree day.

That was the reason that was quoted to me as I started to collect my two balers. Can't feed much hay into them or they clog. If you follow the manual it will tell you to set the feed forks 180 out of phase or when one is up the other is down but if you follow the instructions in the manual they are in phase. All of the ones around here that I have seen are set following the instructions and they can not feed worth a hoot. If you look at the picture and just put the line on top instead of the bottom they are 180 out of phase and EAT hay. I think the dealer locally had one man that set up all of the 530's when they came in and for once followed instructions. LOL When I set mine 180 out they have eaten every windrow I have fed them and can make a little 2000 get down and work.

jerry my baler is 180 deg. out of time too. it will flat out swallow the hay. we used to pul it with a 7000 ford and it wouyld lug it down in heavy windrows. we pull it now with a jd cuz the ford dealer screwd us on our last ford(dont want to get me started in that!)but it still makes it work. we have replaced the knotters once and that was 3 years ago. stated missing bales, but after that it bales like new. just had to add a few more good pointers to the ford battle!!!!

Ford balers weren't the same as NH. I once heard that at least some of them were made by New Idea. I personally never heard much good and did hear a lot bad about them, at least compared to Deere or NH.

Some people seem to get along with them, but my advice would be to steer clear and stick to JD or NH.

tlak,
No, the Ford baler line was discontinued after Ford and NH merged. The later ones made in the mid to late 60's were sourced from Long Equipment company I think. Where I grew up in the mountains of NC these balers were the main brand of balers and baled many a bale. I personally have one (actually two) of the 530 Ford balers that I use. Both had trees growing through them when I got them. Bought the second one as a parts baler and got it baling just fine as well. These balers were built for the 30 Hp size tractor and makes fine bales when properly adjusted and the hay reasonably well raked. They are not the same as a NH but then again NH invented the modern haying systems and everyone else copied them.

Ford hay equipment is not very good. New Holland is about the best amd then John Deere. Ford and New holland were to seperate company's and Ford made good tractors and new Holland made mostly implements and all kinds of hay equipment. You might could get by if you were not baying many bales but for over a 1000 bales a year I would go with a good New Holland because the Ford balers were nothing compared to the new holland. I would get a new holland because it will save lots of headaches.

Weren't the old Ford balers just a repainted Claas import? Just like the Ford combines were?
