This is my third summer trying to learn how do make hay. Last night I finally had a real positive experience with the sickle mower. The first time I tried attaching the mower (JD #9) to my tractor (Ford 850) it took 2 hours and I still didn't get it right. Last night I had it on in 15 minutes and when I cut the hay, it all layed down without any of those annoying stripes left from a clogged blade. What a beautiful sight! Now if I just knew for sure what it is that I did different that made the difference! Now I'm trying to get better at raking the stuff. The rake I just got is a MHF 36 pull behind and it doesn't seem to pick the hay up off the ground very well. I replaced several broken teeth, but I notice the new teeth are quite a bit longer than the others (old ones are worn down I suspect). I guess a full set of new teeth will help. I prefer the pto 3pt rake I had before....I found it much more maneuverable for my small confined field. If anyone has a small 3pt rake near Utah that you would sell (Ford 503, NH 55 or 57, etc) let me know. I think I'll get some shiny red paint for this MHF36, some yellow paint for the wheels, make it look spiffy and take it to the auction next spring.

Jim I discovered that the angle of the guards had an effect on the kind of cutting job I made. I now make sure I have adjusted the top link so that my sickle bar is as level as I can set it to the ground. Good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

Congrats on the nice cutting!
I am also going through the same learning processes myself. Rebuilt a New Idea 30a now it cuts nice. My second baler is working great. I am going to rebuild my old rake thanks to parts rake, wheel , and manual from B. Becker he might be reading this :) I hope that we can all keep doing this stuff safely and with enjoyment. I'd love for our kids to enjoy doing it and grandkids as well.
