What would be the best implement to get to dig a trench about 6 inches deep in "sorta" rocky area. It will be about 100 yards long. I will use one inch plastic or PVC pipe. I have a 601 Ford tractor. Thanks albe

Ya gotta be careful with PVC pipe in rocky soil. I work for a large public utility and we simply will not use PVC in rock - too much time spent going back and repairing the line as the ground shifts cause the pipe to wear thru. Go to your plumbing supply shop and buy the appropriate amount of PE pipe - much better for your use, comes in a roll and will install easily with a subsoiler as mentioned in one of the other posts.

albe,
I dug this out of the Ford N archives.. Couldn't pull up the picture, but it did a great job. A pretty good discussion and suggestions went with the post.

HTH.

dont forget about the frost line. depending on what you use the waterline for you dont wont it to freeze solid and burst in the winter. nothing like hauling water at 20 below .

Find a subsoiler with a tube welded on the back. Make 3 or 4 passes in the same trench until you get it as deep as you want and then feed the black plastic pipe down through the welded on pipe. Tie the end coming out the bottom to something and take off slowly and have someone unroll and feed the pipe down through the tube. It will leave it right there on the bottom and when you run the tire over that trench a few times it fills right in and packs down. Done before you can pick up the ditch witch and if you have to you probably can buy a one point subsoiler for the cost of rental and never have to borrow one again.

Thanks for all of the advice. I will probably get a subsoiler. Now, do I dig in "draft" or "position" control? Also, will the subsoiler dig in since my Ford 641 hydraulics has no down pressure. Thanks again. albe

The subsoiler has the point angled such that it will pull itself deeper and deeper. I use mine in position control because, the way a subsoiler works, instead of pulling on the top link it pushes against it. It will bury itself and draft control will still not think there is a load.
