I have a friend of mine who is a gentleman farmer. He just broke the a chain on his manure spreader and needs to know how to put it back together. He has a tool called a "chain detacher" that he seems to think is the tool for the job, but I have no idea how it works. We never had such a luxury, and just used to beat and pound on it until something else broke.
Any info would be appreciated.

The slots in the detacher are for different widths of chain. Slip a link into a slot then turn next link 90 degrees so its in position to come off or on, which ever the case may be and hit with hammer. All the detacher does is provide a back up and hold chain still while your driving links together or apart. hope this helps

The chain detacher sure makes it a lot easier the break the links, especially in the field. They are about $25 a TSC or Quality F&F. You can probaly get one a lot cheaper at a farm auction, if it can wait.
