I have heard of a tedder rake, disc mower, mulching mower, flail mower and some other things. I think there is at least another style of rake I don't know about too. A side delivery rake is pretty self explanitory. Is the flail the style that is a shaft with chains and "beaters" spinning parallel to the ground? Can a mulcher be of more than one design(the above shaft/chain and a special design blade type maybe)? What does the tedder do to make it special? I need to get a rake for next season but it'll have to be a cheap one.

You are mixing two implements -- rakes and mowers. The tedder is a rake that can also be run in reverse to SPREAD OUT a windrow that is wet or not drying. The side delivery, or parallel bar rake is just what it sounds like, it has a series of bars with teeth that push the hay to one side. The other major rake style is the wheel rake. It is a series (3-10 or more) or wheels with spikes/teeth on them that spin when in contact with the ground, moving the hay to one side. I prefer the bar rake myself, and if you don't have to pull it down the road too far there are tons of the old steel wheel ones available, but for road travel get ahold of a JD or New Holland rubber tired model. They usually run $400-1000 in good shape. The other things you mentioned were all mowers, although you left out the sickle mower which is my preferred hay mower, althugh if I could afford a new one I would get a disc mower/conditioner.

Yep, I knew I was asking about rakes and mowers. What construction type is the tedder, so if I see one I'll know what it looks like? I know the sickle bar but the disc type I'd like to learn about. How does it work, how's it built?

NH also makes an inverter, it picks up the swath of hay from a conditioner & lays it down beside, upside down. Many folks use these to lay 2 swaths together for baling, lets them dry a bit.

There are a couple different types of tedders, they are not popular 'here' but I have seen at least 3 different types, one like a wheel rake but the wheels aren't lined up; one like a basket rake but the baskets spin differently; and one just picks up the windrow & fluffs it, drops it down behind again.

A disc mower is like really heavy duty string trimmers lined up side by side. Instead of string, they use metal ears (freespinning on a bolt) to cut the grass, and each head is driven by a shaft running the full width or gears going arcross the width. Maybe I should say it looks like several very small Bushhogs lined up side by side on a bar...
