How often should I need to perform maintenance on the gearbox on a bush-hog razorback? How do I go about doing it? Is there a special fluid, grease, etc. to be used? Does it need to be completely replaced or just topped off periodically?

These gear boxes are very similar to any bevel gear box or truck rear end. Just keep oil half way up the main drive gear so all the bearings are keep wet.Use a 90WT oil or heavy truck transmission dope. And check the oil in it every time you use it. Just like you check the engine oil every time before you start your tractor.

You could change it every few year but main thing is never run it empty. A local fellow lent his woods mower to a friend, nobody ever checked the oil and they toor up the gears, bearings and but a cracked in the gear box.I managed to weld it and but it back together for him And it's working again. Luck the parts people at the dealer did not sting him to badly otherwise he would have had to junk the mower.

Other than sharpening the blades from time to time and greasing the drive shaft u-joints. There's easy to maintain.

"Wallace Auto Parts" is a brush-hog manufacturer who actually posts their operator's manual on the web for download!

It is a good manual. I don't own a Wallace, but found that the instructions in their manual are generic enough to use to take care of my off-brand bushhog. (I'll also consider buying one of their hogs when this one wears out).

Wallace's web site for downloading the manuals is:

hope this helps,
Tom

I have a wallace mower & I can testify that mine has been rode hard & put up wet - but always greased & I cannot seem to kill it! Good, moderately priced machine.
