I have an older New Idea bush hog, and was told by a friend that I should run grease in the gear box instead of 90W in case I cut out by seal by brush hogging. Any thoughts? Thanks all, Terry

i have seen this question posted before and should have anwsered . do not... repeat... do not put grease like cup grease or chassis lub in a gear box . the gears will carve out a hole where they turn and will not be lubricated . same is true for the bearings .i am surprised with the very knowledgeable people on these boards that this has not been pointed out before . bill b va

When the gearbox warms up, the grease becomes fluid enough to adequately lubricate the gears in the same fashion as it would bearings or other moving parts where grease is used.

greg ... you can lubricate your equipment any way that makes you happy ... iam trying to give others the benifit of my experience if they want it ....i have seen first hand what happens when the solid type of grease is put in a gear box ...if a gear box gets hot enought to melt chasiss lub you have serious problems that gear oil or solid grease is not going to help any way . as for the bearings you refer to that are greased with a grease gun well it don't take a rocket scientest to figure out the reason they put the grease fitting there so they can be greased regulary because the grease gets wiped out. bill b va

I was told by an older dealer to put about a tube of bearing grease into the gear box and to top it off with 80-90. His resoning for this was that the grease would be a safety net in case your seals went bad. Hopefully the grease would protect the gears until you discovered the bad seals. I have done this with no problems for many years.

I just put a new oil seal in mine and the parts guy told me to pack the gear box with grease and I wouldn't have to worry about the seal going bad again. I'm not planning to do it without hearing that from someone who's done it but I guess it makes sense if there is enough grease in the box to make sure some gets in the bearings. One of those gear boxes will hold a lot of grease before its full.

I always use 90 wt. gear oil in my 5' bushog. I don't who who makes it, its a older, well made one though.

Unless your seals are completely shot, I would go with gear Lube (90w). The bearings are designed for the oil to flo through, and not just to be coated in a covering of grease.

Terry,
I've run bush-hogs all my life and believe me, I mean from a pretty young age. This would be a new one on me. I would say, stick with what the manufacturer suggests to use. Besides, if it's a pretty new mower, there would be a warranty issue there.
