How big of a tandem disk can I pull? I have two tractors a Case DC3 and a Farmall H. I was hoping they could pull a 9 foot tandem .. or bigger. I got about 30 acres to work.

Thanks

- Dave

A 9' tandem disk should be just about right for a Case DC under most conditions, but maybe a little much for a Farmall H. The Case DC is a rated 3 plow tractor and the H is a 2 plow. I used to pull a 10 1/2 ft. #37 with my Super M. I also found that faster isn't always better, if I was disking corn stalks, I just chugged along at 3 mph or so and got a lot better job done.

It depends a lot on the type of soil that you have. If you have nice easy to work loam soil, an H would pull a 9' or 10' disk. However if you have heavy clay soil that would be asking a lot out of your tractors. Also, I found that the faster you go, the better job your disk will do of breaking up and leveling your seed bed. You may have to make more trips over the field if your forced to go slower. If you have plenty of spare time this might not be important.

If you are pulling the average, lighter weight 9 foot wheel disc, the DC Case would handle it fine. I don't think an H Farmall will. At 3 Miles per hour and 75% field efficiency, You would disc about 2.5 acres per hour. Or 30 acres in about 12 hours.

Dave, I think your H could pull a 9' disc, you'll need loaded tires or wheel weights, depending on the conditions but as has been suggested it may be slow going. The H will pull in second and perhaps third but don't lug it. I pull a twelve with a 584 and it hucks her along just fine

.....sounds like you need a bigger tractor. it would take 3 or 4 weeks to work 30 acers with a 9' disk. both tractors couldnt pull much more then that anyway. about 8' is all i would want on the h unless it is a finishing disk. we have a 12' taylor way diska and it bogs our 3020 down pretty good so.... if i where you i would be looking for a about a 60 to 70hp tractor and a 12 disk if your gonna be doing more then once...

3 or 4 weeks to work 30 acres? Certainly you are kidding! At that rate you would have to be making only "one round per day"! (or some such ridiculously small number)
Figure it out: Assume you can pull the disk at 4 miles per hour. (A quite realistic assumption)
a 9' disk being pulled at 4 MPH will cover 190,080 square feet in one hour. (4 times 5280 times 9 = 190,080)
there are 43,560 square feet in 1 acre
30 acres is 30 times 43,560 = 1,306,800 square feet
1,306,800 divided by 190,080 = 6.88 hours.

yes it was a joke,i was just trying to get my point across about a small disk. i know what it takes with a 6' disk and a 12'.

Depends on the weight of the disk and the size of the blades. I have a 9' Taylor-Way with 24" blades that is very heavy. It's a great stalk chopper, but if I run it more than a few inches deep in plowed ground, it's all my 90 HP 4020 wants. 10 hp per foot is a pretty mean disk. I also have a 10' JD KBA with 18" blades that my 45 HP MF 65 gas can pull. I know someone who used to pull a 10' KBA with a Super M. An 8' would probably be good for an H.

I pull a 18' disk with a 400D farmall, put the wings up for heavy work, that brings me down to 12'. I have the tires unloaded, and duals on it. It will pull 12' through just about anything, and still pull 18' in 3rd, about 4" deep. I think an H should be abel to pull a 9' disk without a problem.

I pull an 8 with my H and a 12 with my 560. No problem at all for either.
