Hi Everyone-
Borrowed a rake from a friend. I was almost all of the way off the road on the shoulder and guess what? It got rear ended. Broad daylight no oncoming traffic neighbor saw most of it happen. No one hurt. Deputy asked about the Slow Moving Vehicle(the orange triangle thing) sign. I don't think it had one. Not that I found all of the pieces yet. Now I owe someone a rake(have to call them tomorrow) and someone else is looking into their own repairs ...

Please make sure you have a SMV on your gear.
BTW looking for a good 3-5 bar rake on rubber in SE Minnesota. I have a few spare JD teeth as well...
Jim

Commin' sence has long since gone and lawsuites have come into play all to much. For 18 Month's I was not allowed to drive because I was having epileptic seizure's. But that didn't stop the dumb schmuck that clobbered you or whacked the police Officer in Rochester, N.Y.. The operator was told "DO NOT DRIVE" YET HE DID AND GUESS WHAT?? He's in Prison. Now tell me, about the person who think's he should be on the roads while under the influence or talking on the phone??

As sad as it may seem, it is getting to the point where the majority of the population wouldn't know what a SMV sign means even if they did see it, and that's in rural areas! When you get close to metropolitan areas you are fair game for every nut case on the road! I am considering installing a strobe light on my stuff just to get their attention and that would be in addition to the SMV sign!

Please let us know what the moron who hit you said....This excuse has got to be precious. If you can't see a tractor, you sure the heck can't see a pedestrian or motorcycle either!

i'm gonna let off a little steam here. i know the law requires a slow moving emblem on all machinery that moves under 25 mph, but what happened to common sense when driving? anybody that is out on the public roadway driving should be watching what is on the roadway. i have no trouble spotting slow moving machinery.most of these idiots out there are going so fast that they don't even have time to notice what is in front much less time to stop. seems like no one has the time to wait anymore.i try to move my machinery when the traffic is light (sunday mornings) if possible. luckily, i live in a somewhat rural area and most folks still have respect for farm machinery moving on the state roads. i guess if someone cannot see a large cab tractor and haybine moving down the highway, then they probably won't see a school bus either. be safe, folks.

As long as you're venting, me too. I agree with your comments, and feel they apply to a broader issue. The liability laws in the USA seem to have lead to a bizzare attitude where everything that happens to a person is someone else's fault. I think we have some fundimental flaws in these liability laws. I'll stop there, or I'll write a book...

(Along with flaws in my spelling ability.)

Common sense is dead. Most, perhaps all drivers believe there are 2 positions on their throttle, idle and full. Speed doesn't kill, speeding in areas where you can't stop in time does. And tomorrow, more people will die on the highway.

Right, I'm under the impression that at least one SMV placard has to be visible. This year a friend happaned to give me one for free that he got off of a friendly JD dealer. I mounted it to the back of my seat as most of the implements I pull or carry are low enough that it stays visible. I hate moving down 55 mph high ways or going down a hill where anyone topping the hill would suddenly come up from behind and maybe not have enough time to slow or react correctly. Also if I slow down more than two auto's , I pull over and let them pass.

Ouch! Did you have a SMV on the tractor that was visible? It's my understanding that is good enough here in Minnesota, unless they changed the law?

Paul-
They are standard equipment on my tractors and hay wagons. I didn't verify that the rake had one since it was not mine. The bummer is I was using my truck with the flashers on to pull the rake, which isn't considered good enough to be absolved of all fault.

Next time I am at the farm store I am buying a few more and possibly making one magnetic for these instances. Mrs. H doesn't want us borrowing stuff anymore because of this either.

So, I am still having to buy a good rake to replace the smashed one for my friend and getting to repair my old steel wheeled one for my own use.

Then, were you driving over 30 mph? You should not have the SMV displayed if you go over 30 mph, and can (friends of mine have) get a ticket for having one one over that speed in MN.

Just things to consider, these issues get kind of tangled sometimes. Good luck with it all.
