A freind of mine offered the use of his No.10 IH grain drill to plant my wheat. He said, however, that he doesnt like to use it because he gets better yeilds by broadcasting. I measured the distance between the drills and they are 10 inches apart. I had been told by someone else that 10 inches is to wide for wheat spacing. That it should be 7 inches instead. Can anyone help me out on this. You wheat farmers-what is the recommended spacing for drilled winter wheat?

I really like the 10 inch spacing. 10 inch spacing gives a little more space for trash(straw and other mulch) to go through without plugging to give a more uniform seed bed. No piles of straw and dirt makes it a lot nicer to combine.

Depends on where you live. In dryer climates, 10
inch spacing with lower seeding rates are better.
If you recive enough rainfall, 6 or 7 inch at
higher seeding rates are better. Your neighbor
probably got better results broadcasting because
the seed wasn't planted as deep. There are many
factors in wheat yeild. Spacing, depth,
population, packing ( type of press wheel ) time
of planting. My Grandfather always said - the best
drill in the world isn't any good if the guy
pulling it doesn't know what he's doing.
