I am interested in growing some corn on our place along the Smoky Hill River here in central Kansas. How much can I expect to pay for an old planter, picker and sheller? I have a '41 John Deere A with a three point, PTO, and belt pully and a '47 Minneapolis Moline UTI with live hydrolics and PTO. What should I look for and what should I stay away from?

Thanks gentlemen (and maybe ladies), Jon

Where you are, you'd probably be able to get that stuff all for less than $1000. Where I am, even an older picker like a New Idea #10 would bring a $400, a good two row John Deere 290 planter would bring $500, and I just saw a Haban pto corn sheller sell at auction for $1100. From what I've been told talking to other people on the net, that in the Midwest, even a New Idea 323 picker, which is the 1-row Superpicker and the last model made, will go for $500, and two row planters sell for scrap value. I imagine a sheller would go pretty cheap as well. I wouldn't mind having a Minneapolis-Moline Model E myself (and a pickup truck full of parts for it, too, just in case), but hard to find here in New Jersey.

Actually, 1-row pickers are almost unheard of here in the midwest. :) As well, it's a lot easier to find a 4 row planter than a 2 row. I guess they liked doing things bigger around here! But, $1000 should get what he needs.

The past 2 years, MM shellers have gone for $200-500. Parts machines have gone close to $100. Mostly model D or 1200/1210 models around 'here'.

Oh, 4-row (or 2 row) cultivators also go under $100 most of the time.

Did I say an MM model E sheller? I meant a D, of course. Would also take a 1200 or 1210. BUT, there aren't any to be had in these parts, and trucking would be more than it's worth to get one 'here' from 'there'.

A good John Deere 4 row 494 planter will bring $50-$100 here in Il. Decent 1 row picker $200 to $500.

Doug, what part of Il. do you live? and would you e-mail me. I'd like to discuss with you if you know of someone that would have a planter for around that price.
Thank you,
Ron
