My father found a reference to Verity Plow Works being the "Farmer's friend" parent co. Verity was bought out by Massey and he has a Farmer's Friend horse drawn corn planter. We're Massey men and this exited dad. I've looked on the net and could find no other reference. (go figure - the net wasn't around in 1890) Please, if anyone has any leads e-mail or post. Thanks in advance - ALAN

I'll get into my stash and see what I can find. I know that Verity was the outfit that brought real plough savvy to Massey. The old boys say that the Ploughs at the IPM used to be either Massey or Cockshutt. Anything else except maybe for Wilkinson just didn't come close. One old guy told me that your coulter was right when you could shave with it. I can just picture that sight in the bathroom waving that around with a faceful of soap.

I could be wrong, but know a little about farm machinery companies. I do not believe there is any connection between the Verity plow works and the Verity that bought or assumed the assets of M-F. Mike-

William H. Verity was a pioneer among Canadian implement makers. In the late 1850's, Verity, a foundryman, began producing plows, kettles, and stoves by slow (almost primitive) methods as the business developed in size and technique, in the 1870's Verity established a factory in Exeter specializing in plows under the name of "W.H. Verity & Sons". It had garnered a nation-wide reputation for its products based on perseverance, integrity and courtesy.

Just after its arrival in Brantford in 1892, the firm's name was changed to the Verity Plow Co. and the business became affiliated with the Massey-Harris Company, thus allowing it access to the worldwide markets of the Massey firm.

After a disastrous fire in 1897 that destroyed much of the plant, the company rebuilt in Brantford and continued to grow until. at its peak, it had a payroll consisting of over 700 employees.

Over a short period of time the firms of Alanson Harris, Daniel Massey, J.O. Wisener were joined together under one company name, Massey-Harris.

In 1914 the Massey-Harris Company became the sole owners of the Verity Plow Company.

The Massey-Harris Company after getting approximately $200 million in various Canadian government subsidies, moved lock, stock and barrel to the US a few years ago, along the way changing its name to the Verity Corporation.

Massey (I think before teaming up with Harris) did absorb Verity Plow Works. The company that took MF's assets in the 1980's until AGCO came along in the 1990's was Varity Corp., similar but not the same.
