Broken Disk blade

Came home from work last night and went down to feed the animals and saw the outer blade on the old IHC disk that I just bought laying on the ground. One of my sons had taken the disk for a spin among the trees and broke the blade. Can these be welded or are they cheap enough to replace them? Also how hard is it to get the shaft apart to replace the blades?
I am not sure of the size, but I am guessing it is about 16 inches in diameter. The disk is an old double gang drag type that is about 8 foot across. About 1960 vintage.

Marvin, Yes you can weld the blades. I have in leaner years if you are good at welding.I use high nickel rod as the blades are made with lots of carbon for wearability it won't look pretty but the dirt will never know I have welded plow shares with equal success watch the auctions and lots of time there will be a pile of old blades going for scrap price luck!

Put new blades on a 10 footer a few yr. ago and have replaced alot of bearings over the yrs. I use a 2 ft. pipe wrench and a 2 ft. cresent with pipes on them and still need heat most of the time .

You guys do not make this sound easy. I will pull the disk up to the shop tonight and start putting Penetrant onto it tonight and then on Saturday i will try to apply heat and the pipe wrench.

I tore an old double-gang disk apart to salvage enough parts to make a single gang. I still have several disk blades laying around. If you measure the outer diameter and the size of the center hole (mine are square, about 1" or so) I'll check and see if I have one. If so, you can have it for shipping. Email me if you're interested.

Disk blades are special hard metal under a lot of stress in the field. Never knew a weld job that would last, but I don't know everything! :)

The outer blade or 2 are pretty easy to change on the front gang most of the time. You need to take the big nut off and pull off parts until you get to the broken one. If the disk has not been taken apart in a while, that nut can really be frozen on big time. Big pipewrench & sometimes a torch. Be _sure_ to get it on tight again, and spend a whole day retightening the gang when you use it again. It probably has some sort of nut locking device, it needs this. If it is at all loose, it will wobble blades & hurt the shaft. Retighten several times while using the first day.

I'll bet your blades started out as 18" and wore down to where they are. It will be hard to find the right size, and you do _not_ want a bigger one on the outside for sure! You may want to search around for some 'wore out' 18 or 20" blades someone took off, which will match your size blades.

Blades break from hitting rocks mostly. Also, is your disk a solid frame wheel lift? Then they break from making turns with the disk lowered, the disk should be raised on corners.

Marvin Paul is telling you the truth on those disks. I just replaced some on mine this year save yourself some grief start with a torch and the biggest wrench you got. The nut on the end of the shaft will seem like it is welded on if it's been on any leginth of time. You might want to start soaking the nut with kroil or something for a couple of days before you start on it.Good luck
