Looking at 2615 Bushhogs - 15ft batwing. The dealer has inventory with the round Italian gearboxes rated 160/110 and inventory with the new square China gearboxes rated 235/190. The China gearboxes are larger in physical size, hold more oil, and have the same size shafts-so I'm told by the dealer. Does any of you have any experience to offer on these gearboxes. I can't help but think that the new Chineses gearboxes (although rated higher) would be of a lesser quality. Thanks

I don't believe the chinease gear boxes will self destruct instantly, but i'd sure be interested in the answers that this question would generate at the below addy. I just don't believe that the Bush Hog company would put absolute junk on their bat wing mower. (they do have a warr.) I prefer Woods Rotary cutters, but when it comes to bat wing mowers i've heard a lot of good things about Bush Hog. Robert

Talk to the dealer today and he admitted they have had several chinese gearbox problems. Mostly vibration problems and all have been on 10ft models, but no problems with the Italian gearboxes.

The Italian Gearboxes are round and not as Heavy looking and come with a 3 year warranty. They are physically smaller and hold less fluid. The new Chinese gearboxes are physically larger (but same size gears and shafts) and have a 5 year warranty.

He only has 2 of the 2615 Italian gearbox 15ft batwings left. I've been dragging my feet, but I need one. I told him I wanted one. Complete with either hard tires or airplane tires, chains, pans and ready to work = $9000. The Rhino SR15 was $8800, but 30 miles for parts. The John Deere 1517 was $8900 but 40 miles for parts. I believe the Bushhog is the better of these 3 models, plus they are only 3 miles from the farm.

Last Fall i saw those new Bush Hog gear boxes at the Louisville Farm Show. They had one scaloped out so you could see inside it. It sure looked impressive!! I never thought to see where they were built. It's too bad they have stooped to cheapoing them so much!! Hard to believe it's worth it to BH seeing what those batwings sell for!! Why not just put quality parts in them, as this is suposto be a upper end tool! I guess now i have another reasin to stick with Woods rotary cutters. I'm told if you want the best batwing Shulte (sp?) is the one to buy. Robert

The gears and the bearings in the Chinese boxes will scatter on you ASAP. BTDT

Been There Done That.

I made the mistake of not checking before I bought the Chinese model. It will work awhile if you switch out the bearings as they fail 1st. Then the pinion and ringgear will wear out too quick because it's all made with inferior metals
