I got a 1950 Farmall H and recently bought a disk real cheap from a scrap yard. It looks like the picture below and was wondering if this tractor can pull it with out causing it any harm.
There is four rows of 5 disks each. Any thoughts, the soil is a mixture of sand and dirt. Total width of the disk is about 7 foot.

Ray;
The disk that you are planning on using if like mine is cross linked between the front and the back and will flex as you turn. I did break one blade on mine or rather i should say my son broke one blade. We have welded it up, but do not know if it will hold or not. YOu should be able to disk in about 3rd gear with your H after your first pass. You can probably load the disk down pretty good.
Have fun.

The old pull type disks turn a lot better if your tractor drawbar is allowed to swing side to side. Not locked in the center position.

I just bought one of these from my neighbor for 100 dollars. We have about 200 pounds or more of concrete lashed to it and it pulls it fine. If you have some hilly country, then you may have to readjust from a couarse cut to no cut on the disks. It only took a few passes around my first time plowed field to have everything busted up very good. I do have wheel weights, but not any calcium in the wheels, and would recommend putting calcium in them.

Thanks for the advice. I have read in another forum about lifting the disk prior to turning around for another pass. If you dont it can break some of the disks. It doesnt have any road wheels on it and should I just plan on wide turns. My farm land is all flat ground. Any ideas to avoid breaking disks. I cant wait to hook her up next month when I get back to the farm. I am in the Military (Navy Seabees) stationed in Norfolk, Virginia and my farm is in Illinois where me and my wife are going to retire. Thanks again, Have a save one....

There is a big difference between a wheel transport disk & the type you have without wheels. Yours probably is 'flexable' between the gangs (rows of blades) and will piviot as it turns. Or, it is small & light, with a frame designed to handle the turning. So, not to worry. Your disk is designed to operate fully engaged in corners.

On a wheel lift disk, the frame is ridgid, and they are often bigger. When turning, the 'inside' blades of the turn get a great deal of pressure on them as the disk tries to push/slide in to that side. This can break blades, or more likely twist/ crack the frame.

Sometimes the outermost disk blade is a slightly smaller size, to help avoid this problem and not throw as big a ridge of dirt. Don't worry if you have this or not, but if you see it on a disk this is the reason.

Ray,
There should be no danger of breaking a blade while turning with the disc in operating position, even when turning just as short as your tractor will turn. Those blades are quite strong. We had a similar disc and never broke a blade in all the years I can remember. We did occassionally break a small piece out of a blade if it struck a big rock at full speed. Even then, it will still work fine with a small piece of blade missing. Great that you have a farm to retire to. Lots of people are probably in envy.
