will a 9N tractor be able to pull a John Deere 114 (or 116) baler. we are doing hay, sudan grass, and maybe a little alfalfa. it is pretty much flat land, and there wont be a wagon behind it.

I baled this year with my 9-n and a ford 250 baler won't do it again next year. The power is ok but the ground speed is to fast with out live pto. I bought a case sc with live pto for next year still have the ford tho.

Lots of Cases were sold in the 50's to folks who
had fords and AC's for that reason.

If I'm not mistaken, AC had live PTO on the WD/WD-45 and CA by then . . . . Nary see a Case anything around here.

You're right about the AC WDs having live pto. We used a WD with an International #47 baler for a while and it worked OK. Plenty of power. Eventually started useing a International 424 which was even better a/c of the power steering.

Around here you can not buy the wire for them anymore, takes a smaller spool than what is sold for the newer balers, glad to know you found out the model of your baler, I would still like to know if it is the older or the newer version. I have both. It was sold as being able to be puled buy any 2 plow tractor and John Deere's 2 plow tractor at that time was the 18 PTO horsepower B

Doug,

Did you ever get the pictures you wanted (of the 114 or 116 baler)? I might be able to help. Please contact me by e-mail.

I guess you've already found out that the 114 has a 14" X 18" bale chamber and the 116 has a 16" X 18" bale chamber.

Stan

My grandfather pulled an engine-powered 116W up and down the hills here in West Central NJ with a 9N, doing 2000 bales of hay for himself and about 5000 custom every year from 1945 to 1950. Then he pulled it with an 8N for 2 years, then with a Jubilee until 1959 when he bought the MF 65. A little after that came the 14T twine baler. If you have the PTO driven version, you may have some difficulty without live PTO. If you do attempt to run off the 9N PTO, put an overrunning coupler on so that the baler's inertia doesn't try to push the tractor ahead when you go to stop.

Power wise the 9n might be okay, but the baler might push the tractor ecspecially if you have hills. We tried a IH 240 with a JD 327 and it was sorta like a rodeo driving that thing.

The 9n will work marginally. If the hay is too heavy, wet or tough you will wish you had a live PTO though!
