We have a single row New Idea corn picker that keeps pluging up under the rollers. I've moved the rollers both in and out, changed the ground speed, and have even tightened up the gathering chains. Is there anything else I can do or do I just need to keep adjusting it to the correct settings. Any help would be appreciated since I don't have a manual.

check the bearings on those snapping rolls,if they're worn at all they will allow rolls to open up and not grab stalks as well. Some farmers put weld on the rolls or even wrap a length of barbed wire around them but it will cause some shelling of the corn, we always used gunny sacks, roll one of the top corners up and poke it in one of the holes in the roller and let it wrap around, works good, lasts for 1 to 2 loads.

Corn used to be planted at 18,000 per acre, yielded 80-100 bu an acre when those pickers were built. Now we plant 30,000 plus, yields can be double, the corn hybreds have different stalk characteristics.

So, sometimes it just is difficult.

Damp dewy corn can be real hard to get through. Other times a little wetter stalk will go right through, pick better than any other way!

If your snappnig rolls are wore down, you need to weld them up as Tim said.

Dad took my picker out & plugged it 3 times in one round. I do not know what he did. I picked the rest of the 20 acres & plugged up twice the whole day. Different ground speeds & different pto speeds can make a big difference. In brittle stalks, driving faster with slower pto sometimes helps, the stalks pull through, instead of grinding on the rolls & breaking off. Can change a couple times a day with the moisture & sun.

Are the knobs on the rollers worn smooth on the edges? My 323 had that problem. I welded on the edges of the knobs, then reshaped the edges with a die grinder to get them back to what they should be. Pulls everything through now.

in nebraska we didn't pick until late october and didn't finish til nearly thanksgiving,, after the corn had dried down a lot, the stalk as well as the ear, can't go by kernel moisture,,, wait til the stalks are good and dry, leaves almost crumbly. John in Nebr.

I haven't run one of these in a long time, but maybe your stalks and leaves are just too tough. Don't know where you're from, but it's pretty early to pick ear corn here.
