i'm a novice to tractors and i'm looking at buying a 9n with a frontend loader. I have 5 acres of wooded property that is slightly sloped and uneven. Am I wasting my time thinking that I can use this tractor to move rocks from one end of my property to another without power steering.

I have a Ferguson TO30 with front loader, similar situation. I keep it just for loader work. It is ok to drive with loader if you don't have to maneuver too much. Put something heavy on the rear like a disk, etc. I would not plan to use my non-p.s. loader tractor for much else, e.g., driveway work, or plowing or whatever as that would be a real pain, but picking up rocks and hauling them to one spot and dumping is ok, and it also works fine for setting poles or skinning a deer or loading and unloading equipment from a truck. In other words occasional use is fine.

You could do it, might not have much fun. N-series Fords are really not the hot ticket for loader work. That said, there are thousands of them out there with loaders on them. You might be happier in the long run looking for something with power steering. Yes, you'll probably pay more than you would for a 9N. Sometimes you can find a Ford 801 or 601 series with p/s for not too much $. Not sure of the specific model numbers of other makes that would do the same job. Good luck.

Ford "N" series weren't very good for loader work at all... they are too light. if the rocks are very big it probably won't pick them up... also if you buy one with a loader watch the stearing and front axle parts aren't worn out or broke as these tractors are "light" duty.
