i have read all of the post, and i have done my calculations. 326 gallons
is what i came up with.
piexr2xh/231 cu.in.= 326 gallons.

Using Length X Width X Height(which you forgot) gives cubic inches. There are .00433 gallons per cubic inch. Using this formula (80 X 150 X 1) X 0.00433 gives you about 52 gallons per inch in depth. Now I am sure I have missed something but this is a first stab

Jerry-- this tank is round, so if my menory serves me right I can only come up with the 2 dim. The dia. is 80 inches and the lenght is 150 inches . Sorry for not stating that the first time.

Well then the formula would be

pi X rsq X L X .00433gal/ci

Which gives

3.14 X 40 X 40 X 180 X .00433

Which says the tank holds about 3900 gallons

Since this is the size of most "300 gallon" tanks (which vary in actual size from 280 to 350 gallons or there abouts) I think something got messed up to come up with almost 4000 gallons....

Then again, let me convert to feet, and, um, never mind, I'm off today...

There are 231 cubic inches in one gallon.
Round tank? Pi times Radius squared times height, (all measurements in inches) divided by 231 equals gallons. You have a tank that holds 3264 gallons. Big tank, 6 1/2 foot tall by 12 1/2 long.
Paul's guess with 300 gallons must be in error.
If you want to use feet, there are 7.48 gallons in one cubic foot.

How come it works out to a lot less when you use cu.ft.--3.25x3.25=10.5625x3.1416=33.18315x12.5=414.78937x7.48=3102.6244gal.? Well 162gal. difference

Bill,

Your differance comes from your radius conversion. 40 inches = 3.333 ft. Run with this and you will be on the money.

Hey Alvin,

If you are planning on using this as a portable water tank, 3000 gallons of water will weigh in at 25036 lbs. Better get the big tractor out.

Hello,
I think it is Pie * the radius (half diameter)square (times itself) times length. 3.1416*(40*40)*150
3.1416*160*150=75398.4 You can multiply this by the figure given in the previous post of gal. per square inch. .00433*75398.4= 326.5 gal.
You also could divide the cubic inches by the number of cubic inches in a cubic foot then multiply by approximatly 7.5
75398.4/(12*12*12)
75398.4/1728= 43.6333 cu.ft.
43.6333 cu.ft * 7.5= 327.25
I think gal. per cu.ft. is 7.4_ something.
Mark

Mark,

You have a little mistake in your calculation. Your formulas are OK, but 40*40=1600. You are off by a factor of ten. Correct the mistake and you come up with the same number as Mr. Hudson.

Eric,
You would think that I would learn never to do anything in my head, always get a calculator.
Mark

let me try this. (dia squared x pie / 4)x 150 = volume in cubic inches (753,982). 231 cubic inches in a gallon so 753,982 / 231 =3263.99 gallons. i think most fuel tanks have about a 10% air space for expansion of fuel so if thats right the tank would be about a 3000 gallon tank. its late, hope this is correct.
