I have a 6 foot Befco Finishing Mower, gear box was noisy, replaced bearings and was still noisy, took to Befco dealer and they added a missing race, reinstalled gear box and still noisy, spindle bearings feel tight, used all summer with it making noises, mows fine, checked gear box after mowing this weekend and it was hot to the touch, plenty of oil in it, I think this mower should run quieter than it does, not sure what to check next. This is no antique, but can someone tell me if this noise I am hearing and a warm/hot gear boxgearbox is typical of a finishing mower, if it is not what do I check next?
Thanks in advance for your help

Sounds like you hit something that put a bend in a gear or something or bent a shaft, check everything out with a fine tooth comb.

Neighbor had a liquid manure pump that ran every other day for all day. Gear box got so hot it blistered the paint off. Never failed though.

Like the other posts suggested, check the timken preloads. Use synthetic grease for extra temp protection.

Pete,
I have a 6 ft. Bushog that I bought new and the gearbox runs hot also. It has always run hot enough to make water steam a little when I wash it off after mowing. I run the recommended 90 wt. oil in mine. My mower is now about 10 years old and still going strong. I mow about 50 acres five or six times a summer with it.
My friend has an old 6 ft. Servis that also ran a hot box and he emptied the gearbox and replaced the 90 wt. oil with grease. He just used his grease-gun and kept pumping until the box was full. His does not run hot any more, but mine still does. Neither of us had any special extra noise.
Good luck.

I think Burrhead is right on the noise. If the bearings are tight and they are the Tinkin style they might be set up too tight and cause heat. This wouldn't cause any noise though.

C.B is right on the temp.

If the gearbox is making more than a whine it needs the mesh adjusted on the cogs.

It sounds like the gears may be running too deep, and that will also cause over heating.

hot enough that you dont want to hold on to it, but not hot enough to make spit bubble .hot but not too hot is ok ,do'nt know about the noise. modern high speed gear boxes often run fairly warm. sorry for my lack of technical terms (spit)
good luck

if timken bearings and set to tight will make noise also as previous post gear mesh to tight will do it also too much oil will also cause overheat
