Antique Dealers: a sad sight at auction

Went to an estate auction Saturday, picked up some older small equipment. Most attendees were antique and flea-market dealers.

There was an old horse-drawn International 2 row corn planter there in perfect condition...even had several sets of plates with it. I didn't buy it because I had run out of room on my truck (picked up a tedder and some other badly-needed stuff). The planter went for $35 to an antique dealer. As I was leaving the auction, I saw it sitting there still, wheel-less. The guy took the metal wheels off and left the rest of the machine sit there for somebody else to clean up. I guess the market is such that they can get more for individual wheels than for complete equipment. Very sad. Wish I'd known, I'd have bought it and found a good home for it.

I needed a part for my 48 cub and knew where one sat never used. So I stopped and asked the fellow would he sell me the part and he told me to hit the road because those tractors was worth a lot of money. Well 1 month later he took his dozer and ran over the nice cub and mashed it flat and hauled it to the dump. Was'nt nothing salvageable thats what you call a idiot.

I once saw two guys,at an auction, stand a ten foot quack digger on it's back frame member
and the tractor drawn tongue went into the crotch of a tree, then proceed to take off the steel wheels and leave the rest, standing up in the tree crotch. It's Probably still in the tree.

I wish I was at that sale. I hate to see good iron treated that way.

If anyone ever comes across any deals like that on horse drawn equipment give me a shout. Even if I don't have room in my collection I will make room. I'm located in Wisconsin and every year on my vacation I travel the country to pick up everything I have purchased the year prior. As of right now I have to go to Colorado, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, and Tennessee.

Houndman, whereabouts in WI are you? I don't have any horsedrawn stuff for you, but see some of it on auction bills from time to time, and might even run across some in the weeds in my wanderings. I'm in the Star Prairie/Osceola area. e-mail me if you'd like.

What are you looking for. Down here in NC a few Mules where followed. Alot of that stuff is still sitting in barns waiting. BTW if you come to VA from WI I need two Wheel Horse tractors hauled to NC from the Chicago area. I would meet you somewhere or buy you a bull tongue ploww that you would need to come get LOL

Jerry D.,

(Hmmmm----Haul 2 tractors from Chicago to N. C. in exchange for another "toy". Interesting thought----- --) I would be happy to haul your "toys" from Chicago to N.C. but I won't know when my vacation is going to be for next year untill the end of this month or the first of next month. I'll be sure to give you a shout when I find out the dates to make sure it fits into your schedule.

I'm always looking for interesting "toys". As of right now my collection ranges from a John Deere 2 mule left hand turning plow to a #9 McCormick Deering mower. At last count I have 20 items in a shed I found to rent not counting duplicates I have for parts.

This might be a stupid thing to ask but that has never stopped me in the past. Is a bull tongue plow like the John Deere Gulphin plow? Us cheeseheads might call them something else or I might be having a "brain freeze" at the moment.

I have no idea what a "Gulphin" plow is LOL but it sounds mean. A bull tongue plow is often referred to as a shovel plow. I know where there are two barns full of horse drawn sprayers, planters, Smith Plows, Cultivators and so on. I fixed the fellows fathers 8N for him and he took me on a tour. I had never seen a horse drawn sprayer. They used them for tobacco and cotton. But if you are coming this way empty by all means let me know.

Frederick,

Where was the sale located? I'll keep an eye on e-bay to see if someone from that area list some covers.

I know how you feel ,but the antique dealers are buying and sometimes paying the asking price for that old equipment.I had several sets of working horse drawn equipment nobody wanted it, except to use for a display item and a dealer bought it cheap.I currently have a tractor drawn side delivery rake that is complete,am only asking $100,the dealer has approach already asking if i want to sell the iron wheels for $50 bucks,i have decline so far.But someone will own it before snow flies.
